Chapter 8

Unknown

I hated sitting back watching my daughter grow up without me, but I had to do what I had to do. In order for her to be out of harm’s way I had to leave. I just hoped that everybody involved would understand my decisions back then. I watched her mother do her best to make sure that our child had everything she needed and it hurt my heart because she did it by herself. As a man, I should have been there but my job kept me from it all. I was ready to give this shit up so I could be with my family. I had a lot of making up to do. Hopefully they would accept me with open arms and forgive me. Not only that, a few years ago, I found out that I had another child. Another person that I didn’t get a chance to raise. Yea, I watched them too, but it was nothing like being there physically for them. I had enemies and I couldn’t jeopardize my family’s life. If I ever told anybody this, their first question would be, what type of job do you have that will keep you from your family? It’s the type of job that I wish I never took in the first place, if I knew I couldn’t have my family.

I was on my way to enlist in the army. I had no other choices living here in Newark. It was nothing but drugs and crackheads and I didn’t see myself amounting to anything if I didn’t leave. Once I got to the recruiting office, I let the guy know that I was interested and he started asking me a whole bunch of questions.

“Are you married? Do you have any kids? Are you going to college? Are you working? Have you ever been in trouble with the law? Do you have any mental health issues? Do you suffer from depression? Are you easily scared? Do you know how to shoot any type of gun?” He was asking questions left and right, not really giving me the time to answer. A lot of those questions didn’t seem to be the types you would ask if you were trying to get into the military. Anyway, I answered all of his questions with a no and what he did surprised me to the max.

He took me to a back room, closed the door, and locked it. Right when I was about to ask him what the fuck was going on. He hit another switch and the damn wall flipped over. What the fuck was this? The panels on the wall had all types of guns, grenades, swords, and knives. Anything you needed to go to war was there.

“What’s all this man?” I asked the recruiter.

“Look, I’m looking for a strong-minded person like yourself to be a hitman for me.”

“Wait! A hitman? What makes you think I would do something like that?”

“It seems like you have the potential to be one son, just by your demeanor, I can tell.
